but seriously. when three of hip hop’s elders (at this point) - ludacris, common, AND dmx - have all openly co-signed the fact that they hate this dude (and ludacris was in response to some shit drake said int he first place)…….i feel like that’s saying something. like, is it a generational gap? is it a sign of hip hop’s shifting format, at least within the top 40 context (and all of these rappers have had multiple songs on the charts, so it’s no underground vs. commercial hip hop thing)? is it something about black masculinity, is drake challenging black masculine hip hop performance in a way that’s making folks uncomfortable (cough cough common).

or is drake just that shitty of an artist that at this point his mere existence is an insult to the genre? or some combination of all the above?

 I honesty feel like Drake catches it because of his “path to stardom”. Drake was never “in the streets” like a lot of artists. They feel like he hasn’t really been through what they’ve been through and thus doesn’t deserve respect. I guess it’s an un-written rule of hip-hop that you had to have come from the streets. Kanye snuck in through the back door (no pun intended) with a co-sign from Jigga. I respect Drake for the fact that he stays in his lane. He doesn’t try to be hardcore a la Jeezy or any other “hood” rapper. Drake is Drake. DMX is DMX. We’re talking apples and oranges, homie. It is what it is…
